The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, located on an Arctic island near Norway, can withstand a nuclear strike and houses more than two billion seeds.
The secure building, which was opened in 2006, aims to preserve the world’s food supply in the face of climate change, war and natural disasters.
It costs ?4million and protects up to 4.5million variety of seeds from nearly every country in the globe.
The seedbank, dug into a frozen mountainside above the town of Longyearbyen, holds duplicate collection of seeds including staples such as wheat and peas.
The seeds in the vault, which are housed free of charge, can only be accessed once the original collections have been lost.
They are stored inside sealed envelopes and placed in plastic tote containers on metal shelves which are then kept at a temperature of -18C.
A limited oxygen supply in the vault coupled with the low temperature stops the seeds from ageing.
In case electricity inside the facility fails the permafrost surrounding it helps to maintain temperatures at a low level.

It is interesting for people to know just what the word Armageddon means. I remember asking this question myself as it’s a word that often comes up when things are looking apocalyptic on the news channels. I thought to myself, just what does it mean when they say Armageddon? Well I thought, I’ll look in the dictionary and see what it says. Well, I think the dictionary got it right; it said it means the final battle between good and evil at the end of the world. Of course this final battle between good and evil is won by good and not evil, good being the goodness of God, the true goodness that is in Jesus Christ will finally defeat all evil. Jesus will then of course set up His Kingdom on the earth which will last for one thousand years.
Well, if Bill Gates is on the side of good and on the side of God and on the side of Jesus Christ and is with Jesus and not against Him, then he to will have a part to play in the coming Kingdom of God on earth where God’s Will will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Short of this, I’d forget about winning the war should he be against and not for Jesus and further to this, I think he’s wasting his time with all of these seeds.
That’s right Terry! Unfortunately all signs point to Bill Gates being on the wrong side of this final battle.
